Editorial: What Are Your Summer Plans?

By Kira Hamman

Ah, summer. Grades are in, email volume is down, and you can relax, right? Well, sort of. Faculty know that the “summers off” narrative is mostly a myth. Still, it’s true that the pace is different in the summer, and you can focus on things you don’t have bandwidth for during the academic year. You can catch up on developments in your field and pick up projects you set aside at the end of last summer. You can read things that have been on your list for months. And you can finally write that piece for Math Values you’ve been thinking about!

Did you do something innovative in one of your classes this year? Did you have a particularly moving experience with a student? Did you have a particularly interesting experience as a student?

Write about it!

Do you have thoughts you’d like to share, maybe about generative AI, or improving student success, or how education is changing? Or maybe you want to wade into politics?

Tell us about it!

Did you notice some interesting math somewhere unexpected? Did you see or hear something that prompted you to think about an old topic in a new way, or a new topic in any way?

Let us know!

This summer, I challenge you to jump into the conversation happening on Math Values. Maybe start with some reading, either the links above or anything else that catches your attention. Then put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and have your say. Math Values wants your voice, your experience, your ideas. Won’t you take a little time this summer to share them with us? It will be fall again before you know it!
